The members of Lonergan University College sought to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue about fundamental questions of value in culture, art, science, and religion. The College is dedicated both to studying Bernard Lonergan’s interdisciplinary approach and to fostering students’ capacities for interdisciplinary dialogue.
As teachers and students of traditional disciplines in the University, members participate in a Fellows seminar, student seminars, and lectures at the College.

  •  Philosophical Ethics, Traditional Catholic ethics has based itself on the history and development of the natural law theory. This course traces the development of the human person as ethical subject. Various contemporary positions of ethics are also present. Special attention to the thought of Bernard Lonergan and his influence on ethical decision making. (Catholic Theological Union).

A science is a body of systematic and formulated knowledge. Bernard Lonergan, in Insight: A Study of Human Understanding (1956, 5th Ed., 1992) has a chapter on “The Canons of Empirical Method”, in which he briefly suggests that “empirical method … should be applicable to the data of consciousness no less than the data of sense” and would appropriately ”be named generalized empirical method”. Just as Galileo showed how an inclined plane helps us to find intelligibility in motion, and Newton how prisms help us formulate and verify hypotheses regarding light, so exercises in questions, puzzles, and jokes help even children to find intelligibility in the data of consciousness, and to appreciate Aristotle’s distinction between intelligence and sensation. An interactive session of such exercises helps us discover a structure of learning that helps us make sense of the remarkable thinking skills developed in our generation.

Bernard Lonergan, in his philosophical exploration of thinking and of knowledge in Insight: a Study of Human Understanding (1956 or 1992), introduced the term Generalised Empirical Method (GEM). In this session participants will be invited to explore GEM experientially to discover their own mind’s minder and to appreciate its role as a contemporary tool, on the one hand for self-mastery and, on the other, for leading, influencing or facilitating change within the corporate mind. The efficacy of GEM derives from its personal validation and appropriation. As such, it is a powerful tool for executive coaches to facilitate insight, reflective capacities and more effective decision-making within their executive clients. A template of Generalised Organisational Process, GOP, developed from the main features of GEM and the notion of minder, will shed fresh perspectives on the meaning of value-adding for a corporation and on the nature of its governance.

Grupo de Investigación Cosmópolis

Este Grupo interdisciplinario con la Facultad de Teología de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de la Salle y el Departamento de Lenguas Extranjeras de la Universidad de los Andes.
El objetivo principal de este grupo de investigación es conocer a profundidad la obra filosófica, teológica, pedagógica y económica de Bernard J. F. Lonergan (1904: Buckingham, Québec, Canadá – 1984: Pickering, Ontario, Canadá), con el fin de discutirla, enriquecerla y apropiarla críticamente en los niveles del debate académico y la orientación de situaciones problemáticas de orden socio-cultural en Colombia y América Latina.

The word Lonerganian has come up in recent days. In a sense there’s no such thing. Because what I’m asking people is to discover themselves and be themselves.

METHOD: Journal of Lonergan Studies is published twice a year by Boston College, and includes articles by Lonergan scholars from all over the world. A number of Lonergan’s own essays were first published in METHOD, and several “symposium” issues have gathered essays on topics such as consciousness, theology and the human sciences, and philosophy of the religious phenomenon.
